Molecular Symmetry and Chirality
Inversion Centre
Note: viewing the structures on these pages requires use of the MDL Chime Plug-In.

The i operation inverts the molecule, by moving all atoms through a point at the centre, to a position at equal distance on the opposite side.
If the configuration of a molecule is unchanged as a result of inversion, the molecule has an inversion centre i. The i centre may or may not be coincident with an atom.

(E)-1,2-dichloroethene has an inversion centre between the two carbon atoms.

Display the inversion centre.
Perform inversion.
